--- New db4o Release 4.0 is now Open Source ---
db4o release 4.0 is now available for download:
http://www.db4o.com/community
db4o is licensed under both the free General Public License (GPL) and as a commercial license, based on your needs. The GPL is ideal if you are writing software for in-house use, or if you are developing your own free software. The commercial license is ideal if you want to embed db4o in commercial products and distribute them closed source.
Developing db4o in conjunction with the open source community helps us ensure product quality and innovation. We retribute by investing on product development and by providing the open source community with the leading object database engine.
--- New Interactive db4o Tutorial ---
db4o release 4.0 includes the long awaited db4o interactive tutorial. The tutorial allows you to execute the code samples in any order you like and see the results as you go along.
The tutorial has been requested by current db4o developers to show their teams and management the simplicity, accessibility and power of the db4o object database engine.
--- New Free Community-Driven Resources ---
Our new Web site not only features a new easier to navigate, clearer design, it also offers plenty of free resources for and from our growing community of db4o developers:
- CVS access to db4o's development HEAD
- Bugzilla-based bug tracking system
- Adaptive troubleshooting knowledge base
The db4o community page, http://www.db4o.com/community, is also the entry point to a broad range of db4o resources such as the newsgroup, change logs, and a newly expanded download center.

--- New Customer: Eastern Data's Hand-Held Product Powered by db4o ---
The Eastern Data Group is one of the UK's leading suppliers of mobile computing systems, with more than 10,000 hand-held terminals in daily use. 'LoanMaster' (the hand-held software designed for the home credit industry) and 'Mobilise Van' (a route accounting distribution management system) have been redeveloped using db4o.
Replacing legacy databases, Eastern Data Group selected db4o over RDBMS, because:
- db4o is recognized as a platform for innovation
- db4o provides lower total cost of ownership (TCO)
- db4o offers superior performance
- db4o's ease of implementation and integration with .NET.
Other important product lines such as 'RoundMaster' (a doorstep delivery management system), 'FieldMaster (route accounting distribution management systems), and 'SalesPro' (FMCG field sales automation) will be redeveloped along the same lines.
